Note: All lesson plans developed in Microsoft Word (.doc) format and slideshows in Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt) unless noted.

The following is a collection of lesson plans and associated power points, resources tables, and other supporting materials were created as part of 1 “American Memory in Ohio,”  Library of Congress grant programs at Miami University Hamilton.

The program, funded through the Midwest Center for Teaching with Primary Sources (see below for more information), promotes the use of the American Memory Project, the online database of primary sources from the collections of the Library of Congress.

The teachers in the “American Memory in Ohio” program created plans on a wide variety of topics in American history from the development of the Constitution to the history of Christmas celebrations.  The plans are all pegged to the Ohio Content Standards and include lessons for elementary, middle and high school.

The teachers in the program used all types of primary sources including pictures, children’s literature, and material culture.  Each data file contains a complete, easy-to-use plan with online links to the relevant primary sources in the American Memory collection. We hope that these lessons will inspire you not only to use these plans, but also to create new plans using the amazing collection of primary sources available online collection in the American Memory Project.

“America’s Journey:  Continuing to Use the
American Memory Project to Meet Ohio Content Standards”
2010

This disk contains 34 lesson plans, as well as power points, resources tables, and other supporting materials.  These plans were created as part of Miami University Hamilton’s Library of Congress grant program, “American Memory in Ohio,” funded through the Midwest Center for Teaching with Primary Sources at Illinois State University.  The lesson plans utilize the American Memory Project, the online database of primary sources from the collections of the Library of Congress.  These plans represent the work of 17 teachers in 8 school districts, most of whom also participated in MUH’s Teaching American History grant programs.  These teachers created plans on a wide variety of topics in American history from the trials of Valley Forge to impact of immigrant culture on American society.  The teachers in the program included the use of all types of primary sources including photographs, music, and material culture.  Each data file contains a complete, easy-to-use plan with online links to the relevant primary sources in the American Memory collection. We hope that these lessons will inspire you not only to use the plans on this disk, but also to create new plans using the amazing collection of primary sources available online collection in the American Memory Project.   The staff and teachers of this project wish to express their appreciation to Dr. Richard Satchwell, the Midwest Center for Teaching with Primary Sources, Illinois State University, and the Library of Congress for funding this project.
