George S. Vascik, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of History at Miami University. A graduate of the University of Toledo and the University of Michigan, he has taught both American and European History. A political and economic historian, Vascik's research interests have recently led him into the field of Historical GIS, where he is working on a collaborative project with the Institute for European History in Mainz, Germany. His articles and reviews have appeared in numerous scholarly journals, and he has been a participant in two NEH summer institutes.

Dr. Vascik is also an active member of numerous professional societies, including the Social Science History Association, the European Social Science History Association and the Association for History and Computing. He is on the editorial board of the latter society's journal, History and Computing. A popular, rigorous and innovative instructor, Dr. Vascik has recently worked with Hamilton city schools on the renovation of their European history AP curriculum.

Dr. Vascik will serve as one of two principal instructors for this project and as such will be co-leader of the summer institutes and academic-year seminars.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • As a Ph.D. in history, ultimately responsible for content, i.e., the selection of all topics and readings for the summer institute and academic year seminars
  • Primarily responsible for the teaching of one-day academic year seminars and more than half the summer institute history content sessions
  • Responsible for the selection of guest presenters and their topics
  • Supervises the content of the curricular units prepared by teachers
  • Coordinates the content of field trips
  • Provides an active and visible example of a historian at work
