Apply to be a Tutor
Tutors are required to take EDT 310: "Methods
of Tutoring Adults," a one-semester hour, credit/no
credit course. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory.
We recognize that all tutors hired by Learning Assistance
have adequate knowledge in their discipline to be
effective tutors; however, students experiencing difficulty
in course material often have unique profiles, which
may be inhibiting their ability to be successful.
Understanding these educational differences is critical
to being an effective tutor. The content of EDT 310
focuses on developing the tutors' skills in assessing
student approaches to learning and the application
of useful study strategies.
If you would like to learn more about being a tutor, complete the online tutor information request form and we'll contact you.

"I think that the EDT class is a great step,
and is sort of making a central ground where tutors
can get together and discuss problems and methods
for creating a friendly learning environment. by providing
tutors with ways to deal with students and situations
, it is in turn helping the students to take their
position as peer tutor more seriously and feel and
behave more professionally."

"I believe that it is vital to assess how clients
perceive and retain information as well as what they
learn. I know that Miami-Hamilton tutors know how
to do this all at the same time."

"I find it funny that I learn so much about
tutoring when I have been doing it for so long. But
nevertheless at least this EDT course pulls it all
together so we really can apply different tactics
when helping others.
I find myself using methods and ideas learned from
the class even though I have been tutoring for a while
now."

"We can't just wing it when tutoring students.
The things that I have learned while becoming a tutor
have helped me to become a better student. The experience
is invaluable. We need to be trained to learn a method
to better help our clientele."
