ESL Classes and Services at Miami Hamilton
The non-native English speaking population at Miami Hamilton increases each semester. In order to keep up with this trend, the Office of Learning Assistance offers classes and support services that enable these students to achieve academic success.
ENG 007 teaches basic skills for writing effective compositions. Instruction includes fundamentals regarding the writing process, paragraph development, sentence structure and vocabulary. Essays include narrative, response, analytical and an introduction to research.
Concurrent registration in ENG 111 required. This 60 minute lab uses papers assigned in ENG 111 to learn ways to improve content, grammar, and editing skills through instructor guidance.
Concurrent registration in ENG 112 required. This 60 minute lab uses papers assigned in ENG 112 to learn ways to improve content, grammar, and editing skills through instructor guidance.
Skills such as critical thinking, understanding contexts, and engaging with other learners are entwined with composition writing. This class satisfies the Miami Plan requirement.
Students explore different types of writing through analysis and reflection of literary texts such as narrative works of fiction, drama, and poetry. This class satisfies the Miami Plan requirement.
Workshops
The ESL Specialist conducts workshops specifically designed for ESL students on campus. Pronunciation, grammar, and American culture are examples of topics covered.
Tutoring
The ESL Specialist provides individual tutoring for ESL students as needed. Tutoring sessions are designed to address each student’s specific needs.
