Lane crew leader for Women’s Build project in Hamilton
May 12, 2009
Tammy Lane, MUH program associate for Student Activities, Athletics and Recreational Sports, is working weekends this summer as a volunteer crew leader for Tri-State Habitat for Humanity’s first All-Women Build.
The team is building a house for the Gilbert family at 246 Washington St., Hamilton.
"The past five Saturdays have been some of the most rewarding of my life. In fact, I may have received more than I actually have given. This build has given me the opportunity to help the dreams and hopes of three beautiful children and one courageous father become a reality," Lane said. "Carlo, Lyric, Trinity and Cyncere Gilbert have suffered the very tragic loss of their wife and mother. So to be a part of a community that will try to restore a little hope for this family, to me, it is an honor."
The house under construction in Hamilton is Tri-State Habitat’s first All-Women Build as well as its first certified “green” project.
Tri-State Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people of all faiths and races to develop communities for people in need by building and renovating houses, creating homeownership opportunities. Habitat for Humanity houses are sold for no profit. Homeowners contribute "sweat equity" and house payments are recycled to build additional houses.
"It is wonderful to see as many as 30 volunteers on a Saturday come to help build this house. If ever you need to restore your faith in the community, then stop by 246 Washington Street and you will see so many wonderful people gathered together with one goal in mind and that is to build a wonderful house for the Gilberts and creating a great foundation for Carlo to make a home for his children," Lane said.
Volunteers are needed among women and girls age 16 and above. Previous construction experience is not necessary, and training will be provided onsite. Volunteer work involves service on subcommittees, providing refreshments, and helping with fundraising as well as actual construction work.
