Frequently asked questions about severe weather, campus cancellations

December 9, 2009

The current changeable weather serves as a reminder that it is Miami University policy to hold scheduled classes, except during emergency situations. In bad weather, the campuses will make every reasonable effort to remain open.

Frequently asked questions

How can I be notified if there is a delay or campus closure due to severe weather?

Sign up for emergency text messaging at www.muohio.edu/police. If there is an emergency alert of any kind, you will receive a text message to your cell phone and/or email. (Choose options during sign-up process.)

What other ways can I learn about possible delays and closings?

The best source of information is the emergency text message system, Hamilton and Middletown campus home pages and Weatherlines, and the VOALC home page:

Hamilton Middletown VOALC
www.ham.muohio.edu www.mid.muohio.edu www.muohio.edu/voalc
Weatherline:
(513) 785-3077
Weatherline:
(513) 727-3477
Students taking classes at the Voice of America Learning Center are also contacted via listserv message.

Does the University notify area radio and TV stations? If so, which ones?

Yes. Be aware that news agencies have their own language for reporting cancellations and closings. That language is often different from what the campus reports to them. Accordingly, the best source of information is the emergency text message system, campus websites and Weatherlines.

Should you need to consult the media, listen to or watch:

Radio FM WEBN-FM 102.7 WVXU-FM 91.7 WMUB-FM 88.5 WPFB-FM 105.9
Radio AM WKRC-AM 550 WMOH-AM 1450 WLW-AM 700 WPFB-AM 910 WHIO-AM 1290
TV WKRC-TV 12 (CBS) WLWT-TV 5 (NBC) WCPO-TV 9 (ABC) WXIX-TV 19 (FOX)

What happens if the campus has to close during final exams?

If classes are cancelled during final exams, faculty and students should consult the campus website for the revised exam schedule.

What does it mean for staff if the campus is closed but the announcement adds "Plan A" or "Plan B"?

Plan A – classes are cancelled, but all staff report as usual
Plan B – campus is closed, but emergency staff for custodial and maintenance services report as usual

When is the decision made to cancel or delay classes?

The decision to cancel classes on the regional campuses will be posted to the campus websites and Weatherlines by 7:00 am for day classes and by 4:00 pm for evening classes. An Emergency Text Alert will also be sent to subscribers

For more information, read the Weather Emergency Cancellation Policy for Miami University's Regional Campuses.
