Guelzo to receive Dolibois Prize as MUH celebrates Lincoln
March 24, 2009
Abraham Lincoln not only saved the Union, he defined the modern U.S. presidency as he personified and enshrined some of the noblest ideals of American democracy.
Lincoln is being celebrated worldwide in the year of the 200th anniversary of his birth, and Miami Hamilton is pulling out all the stops.
Allen Guelzo, one of the word’s leading experts on Lincoln, will consider Abraham Lincoln, Philosopher: A Man of Ideas at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in Parrish Auditorium on Miami’s Hamilton campus.
Director of Civil War Era Studies and the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College, Guelzo will receive the 8th Annual John E. Dolibois History Prize that evening. An internationally-renowned author of innumerable books and articles on Lincoln, Guelzo’s most important work, Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President, won the prestigious Lincoln Prize in 2000.
”We at Miami Hamilton join the City of Hamilton and indeed the entire world in celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of our nation’s greatest president,” said Michael Carrafiello, MUH Associate Dean and director of the Michael J. Colligan History Project. Guelzo’s lecture is sponsored by the Colligan project in concert with the Hamilton Community Foundation.
“We look forward to professor Guelzo’s insights with great anticipation, and we are delighted to confer on him the Dolibois Prize in recognition of his lifetime achievements in history education,” Carrafiello said.
Guelzo received both his master’s and doctorate degrees in history from University of Pennsylvania.
His lecture will be followed by a reception and book signing on the Parrish Auditorium stage. The event is free and open to the public; no tickets required.
“We hope you can join us for this very special evening,” Carrafiello said.
