Sobecki elected to Shared Harvest board of directors;
Miami Hamilton sets campus record for food donations

June 24, 2008

Dr. Dave Sobecki, Associate Professor of Mathematics & Statistics, has been elected to the Shared Harvest Foodbank Board of Directors.

Based in Fairfield, Shared Harvest partners with pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, treatment centers, and after-school programs in Butler, Warren, Preble, Darke, and Miami counties in Southwest Ohio.

Sobecki has directed Miami Hamilton’s food drive for several years, initiating passionate and aggressive campaigns toward the end of each semester. The most recent drive (spring ’08) resulted in a new campus record for food weight with 2,292 pounds. He also collected $260 in cash donations.

“Proceeds from the spring food drive were delivered up the street to the Open Door Food Pantry, where the good folks were once again very appreciative,” Sobecki said.

The previous record was 2,171 pounds donated by the Miami Hamilton community in December 2007. Since 2005, the campus has donated more than 7,000 pounds of food and more than $1,000 in cash to the program.

Sobecki emphasized the importance of donating – especially during these tough economic times. His office in Mosler Hall becomes a cluttered clearinghouse at the end of each semester, and that's the way he likes it.

"I'm very proud of the way this campus responds," Sobecki said.
