'A Game For All Races' date confirmed

March 4, 2008

Oh, the stories they can tell.

A Game For All Races, cancelled in February due to icy conditions, has been rescheduled for 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the Wilks Conference Center.

Jimmie Jones, director of Multicultural Services at Miami Hamilton, said the program is a great opportunity for the community to reminisce and honor the history of professional baseball in the United States with former players from the Negro Leagues/Major League Baseball.

Special guests include Leo Cardenas (Cincinnati Reds), Charlie Davis (Memphis Red Sox), Charles Harmon (Indianapolis Clowns), Donald Johnson (Chicago American Giants, Philadelphia Stars) and Ron Warren (Detroit Stars, Cincinnati Tigers, Brooklyn Dodgers).

The keynote speaker will be Adrian Burgos, Jr., Ph.D., associate professor of history at University of Illinois. Burgos has written extensively about the Negro Leagues and the influence of Latin America on professional baseball in the U.S.

A panel discussion with the aforementioned players will follow Burgos’ presentation. Classic memorabilia will be on display including photographs, cards, uniforms and caps.

The program is dedicated to the memory of William “Sonny” Webb, a former Negro Leagues standout player who died in 2007.

A book signing and reception will follow.
