Take one talented young Latino immigrant, and one outstanding Miami Hamilton Art Department and what do you get? The newest Miami Oxford architecture student, our own José Gutierrez.
José’s dream since he was a child was to be an architect and now, thanks to his hard work and a great support system, he is going to realize that aspiration as he enters the Oxford program in Summer 2008. Even more to his credit, José has been accepted as a second year student.
José’s work, which includes, painting, drawing, and sculpture, shows the perfect balance of color, imagination and mastery necessary to get into Oxford’s highly competitive program. Some of his pieces are clearly reminiscent of his childhood in Mexico, such as a beautiful line drawing that hints at the centuries old tradition of the “ex-votos.” Others, like his life-sized sculpture of his younger brother and a giant hammer serve as a reminder of the labor his father has undertaken in order that his children are able to realize their own dreams in this country.
As the oldest of seven children, José came to the United States when he was 12 with no context for life in this new country. José’s intelligence coupled with a strong sense of purpose helped him master English and other obstacles. Now, less than a decade later, he has met each barrier with grace and courage, determined to take full advantage of this opportunity at higher education.
We are fortunate indeed to have such a remarkable and gifted young man here at Miami Hamilton. ¡Felicitaciones José!
