MUH celebrating Native American heritage
November 7, 2008
Special events are planned as Miami Hamilton celebrates Native American Heritage Month in November.
A program about Miami University’s partnership with the Miami Tribe, "Myaamia and Miami: Partners in Learning," will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday, November 10, in the Office of Multicultural Services, 114 Rentschler Hall.
Bobbe Burke, Coordinator of Miami Tribe Relations, and George Ironstrack, Assistant Director & Education Coordinator of the Myaamia Project, will present the short film "Neepwaantiinki" (we learn from each other), followed by a discussion about the formal and informal relationships that have developed as a result of this partnership.
Finger foods and refreshments will be served.
The campus and community can also enjoy a taste of Native American cuisine and watch the documentary film "Wa-WHO? Nothing is Sacred" from 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, November 13, in 114 Rentschler.
Later that day, a special program entitled "Myaamia Education: New Perspectives in Learning" will take place at 4 p.m. in the Miami University Art Museum in Oxford. Transportation from MUH to the museum will be provided. Departure time will be 3:15 p.m. from 114 Rentchler.
The final event features Robert Roche, Executive Director of the American Indian Education Center in Cleveland. Roche will lead an informal discussion about the critically-acclaimed movie "Smoke Signals," a distinguished winner at the Sundance Film Festival. Smoke Signals is one of the first films to be written, directed, produced, and acted out completely by Native Americans.
Roche also will demonstrate how to prepare Indian Fry Bread.
