Employee Health & Well-Being activities coming to Miami Hamilton

February 19, 2007

Miami University’s Employee Health & Well-Being, a new unit within the Human Resources Department, will be sponsoring activities for employees at Miami Hamilton beginning this spring.

Here’s what’s on tap so far:

HawkWalk

The HawkWalk will take place on the Hamilton campus from noon-1 p.m. on Fridays beginning March 23 through April 27. HawkWalk is a six-week group walking/wellness experience designed to lead participants to physical, spiritual, social and intellectual awakenings.

Each week, HawkWalk will take employees on a new wellness adventure to enhance their energy and general well-being. The program emphasizes muscle stretching and introduces hip hop music and tai chi martial arts therapy for promoting health and longevity. The HawkWalk program includes a book club and suggested readings. Registration information is forthcoming.

Blood Pressure Monitoring

Also in the coming weeks, Employee Health & Well-Being, in cooperation with the Department of Nursing, will offer a blood pressure monitoring program. Screenings will be performed by training nursing students at the Wellness in Nursing Center at University Hall during designated hours to be announced soon.

Fitness Center

Employee Health & Well-Being is working with the Recreational Sports Center in Oxford to provide Miami Hamilton employees with trained student Health Fitness Instructors (HFIs) in the Fitness Center at no cost to employees. The Fitness Center is staffed by HFIs from 7-9 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

In a nutshell

Employee Health & Well-Being focuses on the whole person – mind, body and spirit. Its goal is to offer a variety of activities, events and experiences to prevent lifestyle-related diseases and conditions and enhance quality of life. The program is directed by Dr. Jay Kimiecik. Marlene Diers is the programming coordinator.
