Well-behaved women seldom make history

April 4, 2007

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Harvard University professor, will discuss how Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History at 7:30 p.m. Tues., April 10, in Parrish Auditorium. This is the closing event in the 2006-07 Michael J. Colligan History Project Lecture Series. It is free and open to the public.

Ulrich is a pre-eminent historian of early America and the history of women. She will receive the 5th John E. Dolibois History Prize prior to her lecture. Dolibois, a former Miami University vice president and U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, is the last remaining interrogator for the Nazi war crime trials at Nuremburg.

Ulrich’s 1991 Pulitzer-Prize winning book, A Midwife’s Tale, was later made into an acclaimed PBS documentary television series featuring Ulrich as narrator, script collaborator and consultant. A Midwife’s Tale focuses on the life of a New England midwife and examines the role of women in the household and local market economy, the nature of marriage and sexual relations, aspects of medical practice and the prevalence of violence and crime in the early American republic.

“Professor Ulrich rates among the most highly visible and respected members of the academy today. She is more than a worthy addition to the distinguished list of Dolibois Prize recipients,” said Michael Carrafiello, Miami Hamilton Assistant Dean and director of the Colligan History Project.

“We look forward to her lecture and the gala public reception and book signing that will follow on the Parrish stage,” Carrafiello said.

Ulrich earned a B.A. in History at University of Utah, an M.A. in English Literature at Simmons College and a Ph.D. in History at University of New Hampshire. She was born in Idaho in 1938.
