New student group transcends campus borders

A new student organization has been formed to bring together Miami students interested in doing public work in the Hamilton area.

The focus of Student Activists for Language and Cultural Exchange (SALCE) is one-to-one exchange between immigrant communities and Miami students. SALCE members and their community partners engage in dialogues about language and culture in both the United States and Latin American countries.

SALCE teaches English to non-native speakers at various locations in Hamilton and Fairfield, including Taqueria Mercado. The language exchange program is designed to build friendships, focusing on conversations and practical applications of English in daily life, according to Dr. Shelly Bromberg, Miami Hamilton Assistant Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies and a SALCE adviser.

SALCE wants to aid new residents in the process of adjusting to life in the United States by providing a comfortable environment in which to practice conversation skills and make new friends.

Miami Hamilton students interested in joining SALCE or learning about future exchange opportunities should contact SALCE President Angela VanHorn, vanhoram@muohio.edu, or Chris Scott, scottcp@muohio.edu.
