Harry T. Wilks Lecture Series presents Lee Hamilton Nov. 14
October 26, 2007
Lee Hamilton, a key figure in America’s war on terror and homeland security, will discuss how to combat the threats of the 21st Century at 7:30 p.m. Wed., Nov. 14, in Parrish Auditorium.
“We’re very pleased Lee Hamilton will continue the tradition of engaging and timely speakers as part of the Harry T. Wilks Lecture Series at Miami Hamilton,” said Dr. Daniel Hall, Campus Dean.
“His experiences on the 9/11 Commission and the Iraq Study Group should make for an interesting and insightful lecture,” Hall said.
Hamilton’s lecture topic is A Balanced View of American Power: How to Combat the Threats of the 21st Century.
An Indiana representative in U.S. Congress for 34 years, Hamilton served as vice-chair of the 9/11 Commission and co-chair of the Iraq Study Group, the latter created at the urging of Congress to provide a bi-partisan, forward-looking assessment of the situation in Iraq. Facilitated by the United States Institute for Peace, the group made its recommendations public in December 2006.
Hamilton is a member of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, the President’s Homeland Security Advisory Council, the FBI Director’s Advisory Board, the CIA Director’s Economic Intelligence Advisory Panel, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Task Force on Preventing the Entry of Weapons of Mass Effect on American Soil.
He also is director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and the Center on Congress at Indiana University, a non-partisan educational institution which seeks to improve public understanding of Congress and encourage civic engagement.
Hamilton is a graduate of DePauw University and Indiana University School of Law. Prior to his election to Congress in 1965, Hamilton practiced law in Chicago and Columbus, Indiana.
The Harry T. Wilks Lecture Series was established as an endowment to bring to campus national and international speakers who shape the policies and ideas of human endeavor. Past speakers include New York Governor Mario Cuomo, biologist Stephen Gould, economist Jane Bryant Quinn, and political commentator Pat Buchanan.
Hamilton’s lecture is a free event open to the public, but tickets are required for seating. For tickets call 513.785.3020.
