Miami Hamilton welcomes Yale’s David Blight Nov. 7
David W. Blight, Professor of American History at Yale University, caps the fall schedule of the Michael J. Colligan History Project Lecture Series at 7:30 p.m. Wed., Nov. 7, in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center at Miami Hamilton.
Blight, one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the U.S. Civil War and its legacy, will discuss his latest book, A Slave No More. It’s a true story about two ordinary men who survived vicious beatings, humiliation and isolation to become literate, escape their owners and reunite with their families.
Slave narratives are extremely rare, especially in first-person accounts. A Slave No More is filled with the humor, faith and joy of Wallace Turnage and John Washington, who can now take their rightful place in the canon of American History.
Prior to joining the Yale faculty in 2003, Blight taught at Harvard University and Amherst College. He earned his Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin and hails from Flint, Michigan.
Blight’s lecture is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow.
