Workshops designed to help students succeed

January 4, 2007

Miami Hamilton’s Office of Learning Assistance will offer several workshops in the coming weeks designed to help all students succeed and placing emphasis on those who may be struggling to stay afloat.

The fast-fix workshops will be conducted early in the Spring ’07 semester to allow students off to a slow start plenty of time to recover, stay on track and succeed in the classroom, according to Pete Haverkos, Director of Learning Assistance.

The following workshops will take place in 105 Rentschler:

Ins and Outs of Financial Aid: Ann Alfers, Coordinator of Financial Aid, will go over the basics of what every student needs to know about paying for college. She will review FAFSA, scholarship applications and more at 12 p.m. Tuesday, January 16.

Academic Warning Recovery: Three sessions are planned with Haverkos and Mary Bausano, Assistant Director of Student Services, who will share tips and strategies to help students recover fast and avoid academic probation. The sessions will take place at 12 p.m. Wednesday, January 17; 3 p.m. Monday, January 22 and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 6.

Basic Computer Communication: Managing muohio & myMiami: Jim Lipnickey, Miami Hamilton’s Director of Computing Services, will help students unravel the secrets of basic navigation through the electronic system that Miami provides for all students. This workshop will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 24.

Reading Textbooks: Reading Specialist Sue Sepela will provide strategies and techniques for students to become efficient and effective readers of textbooks, which are often viewed by students as dull and unfulfilling. This session will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 13.

Notetaking & Easier Learning: At 2 p.m. Thursday, February 22, Sepela will discuss strategies and techniques for taking good notes while listening to lectures or reading textbooks.

Managing Test Anxiety: Bausano will talk about the causes of test-taking anxiety and strategies to overcome those fears, including useful tips for those who tend to panic during tests and thus may not receive a grade that is reflective of their knowledge. This workshop will take place at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 27.

Exam Preparation: Haverkos will discuss how to effectively prepare for the tortuous week of exams, including tips on test-taking, time management and study techniques. This session will take place at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 11.
