ENT students fit the bill with area employers

The local job market for engineering graduates and co-op students is strong, and Miami Hamilton’s Office of Co-op/Internship & Placement continues to strike while the iron’s hot.
Miami Hamilton ENT students are working as lab technicians, computer-assisted design (CAD) operators, project engineers, operations technicians, quality control assistants, and process/development engineers with local, regional and national companies including Proctor & Gamble, General Electric, AK Steel, OPW, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Valeo, Force Control, and Advanced Drainage, among others.

“In professional practice and professional development courses (ENT 220 and 221), students learn the necessary skills to make informed choices about their career field, and gain the professional skills they need to be successful as co-ops/interns in the workplace,” said Dr. Shelley Cassady, Miami Hamilton Director of Co-op/Internship & Placement.
“They also learn to prepare competitive resumes, improve interviewing skills, and understand the job search process as it relates to career development and lifelong learning,” Cassady said.
Approximately 70 percent of students who register are placed in a co-op or internship position within a year, and after graduation about 35 percent are offered a full-time position with the company, which parallels the national data, she said.
Once placed, students develop goals and objectives for the position with their supervisor and hit the ground running. Each student and his/her supervisor receive an on-the-job visit from Cassady at mid-term to discuss student progress in the work-based learning experience. Students are evaluated on job knowledge, work quality, attitude, judgment, reliability, adaptability, attendance, punctuality and personal appearance.
The co-op/internship program at Miami integrates classroom study with industry employment that relates directly to a student’s major, according to Cassady.
“This group of ENT co-op students is outstanding. They get it done in the classroom and on the job.”
