Standout student to further his studies as a Razorback
April 25, 2007

Miami Hamilton student Alex Hall (in photo, left, with journalist Hector Tobar), who will graduate cum laude this semester with departmental honors in English, has been accepted into the Graduate English program at University of Arkansas.
Not only that, but Hall has been granted a full tuition waiver, a teaching assistantship and a $10,000 stipend.
A native of Hamilton, Hall completed his capstone at Miami Hamilton and has been very active in civic engagement projects as an undergraduate student, according to Dr. Shelly Bromberg, Miami Hamilton Assistant Professor of American and Latin American Studies.
Hall has been an active member of the Association of Latino and American Students. Earlier this month, he presented at the Undergraduate Scholars symposiums on Miami’s Hamilton and Oxford campuses.
Awards
Hall will receive one of seven Student Scholar awards at Miami Hamilton’s Graduate Recognition & Honors Dessert in Parrish Auditorium May 4. That same evening he will be awarded a Commendation for Contributions to the Community from Hamilton Police Chief Neil Ferdelman, for producing a top-notch video designed to help Latinos understand basic laws of the City of Hamilton. “From the Midwest to Mexico” is available for viewing on The JournalNews’ Spanish language website.
“Alex received a $500 undergraduate research grant to make the video, and he spent every cent of it on reproducing the DVD,” Bromberg said.
Hall also received the Alejandro Garrote Scholarship through Miami University’s Latin American Studies Department. Garrote was a Miami student on the Oxford campus who died and his family established a scholarship in his name. With it, Hall traveled to Michoacan in central Mexico and found the answer (see the video) to the question he most wanted to ask: Who are the Latinos coming to Hamilton?
Oh, and he also plays guitar in a band.
“Alex is an extraordinary young man and a very well-rounded individual,” Bromberg said. “He is the first in his family to receive a BA, let alone go on to graduate school.”
