Davy Crockett topic of next Colligan lecture

Paul Hutton, a distinguished scholar of America’s mythical westward expansion, will delve into the unlikely demise of Davy Crockett, one of history’s greatest and most celebrated pioneers, at 7:30 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 16, in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center at Miami Hamilton.
Hutton’s lecture, entitled “Davy Crockett: The Controversial Legend of his Death,” continues a string of highly successful and well-attended events sponsored by the 2006-07 Michael J. Colligan History Project Lecture Series.
A history professor at University of New Mexico, Hutton is executive director of the Western History Association and is widely published in both scholarly and popular magazines.
He specializes in U.S. history, frontier history, military history and popular culture. Hutton has published several books including The Custer Reader, Eyewitness to the Civil War, and Soldiers West: Biographies from the Military Frontier. He won the Western Heritage Award in 1999 for his article on Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders.
Hutton earned his doctorate from Indiana University. His forthcoming book, Sunrise in His Pocket: The Life, Legend and Legacy of Davy Crockett, will be released next year.
