Grant awarded for new eWrite assessment tool

Writing Specialist Janet Valente of Miami University Hamilton has been awarded a grant for $750 from the Office of Small Grants for Assessment Projects at Miami University to purchase 100 units of eWrite COMPASS to pilot a program this fall in English 007.

According to Valente, this new assessment tool will provide more accurate data for better placement recommendations for incoming students.

"National trends suggest a more complex profile of student assessment," she said. "This e-Write pilot is two-fold: 1) it will provide a cost-effective writing evaluation that is scored electronically, ensuring both objectivity and consistency that are currently not available; and 2) it will be administered for a second time at the end of the semester to provide an objective and consistent outcome-based measurement of improved student writing."
