Appalachian Studies Month around the bend

The Oct. 19 lecture and presentation by renowned Appalachia photographer Shelby Lee Adams in Parrish Auditorium kicks off Appalachian Studies Month at Miami Hamilton.
The theme is “Perceptions, Reflections and Directions.”
Miami Hamilton also is developing an academic program for Studies of Appalachia, according to Dr. Lee Sanders, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
An American Studies film course (AMS105), entitled “Seeing Appalachia” begins Oct. 2 and runs for eight weeks on Monday evenings in Mosler 200. Shows start at 7:15 p.m. The program is free and open to the public, Dr. Sanders said.
Other scheduled events include a live music performance by the nationally-renowned bluegrass band Cherryholmes at 8 p.m. Sat., Oct. 21, in Parrish Auditorium, and a lecture by novelist and author Silas House at 7:30 p.m. Mon., Nov. 6, in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center.
A panel discussion of Appalachian Reflections is set for Nov. 14 (time and place TBA), to include author and Journal-News columnist Ercel Eaton.
Appalachian artwork and quilts will be on display during the month in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center atrium.
