On April 7, The Michael J. Colligan History
Project welcomes J. Gregory Payne, an expert
on the Kent State shootings of 1970, who will
speak about the now 35-year-old tragedy.
Payne is the associate professor of Emerson
College’s Department of Organizational
and Political Communication and the official
archivist of the Kent State shootings. An author,
speechwriter and expert on political communication,
ethics, and docudrama, his work on Kent State
includes the book Mayday: Kent State, and a
play Kent State: A Requiem. Payne also has organized
several commemorative conferences that have
featured eyewitnesses, victims, families, guardsmen,
academics, media professionals, attorneys, playwrights,
actors, and artists.
“Dr. Payne knows more first-hand information
about the events of May 4, 1970 than anyone
on the planet,” said Michael Carrafiello,
director of The History Project. “He has
traveled the globe telling his story and inviting
people to recall where they were and what they
were doing on that dark day 35 years ago. His
appearance at Miami Hamilton, moreover, will
feature the world premiere of a video excerpt
from a documentary that he is producing.”
Dr. Payne’s lecture begins at 7:30 p.m.
in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center. The
lecture is free and open to the public. A reception
will follow.
