Academic
Advising launches new computer program
March 2, 2005
With a swipe of a Miami ID, students at Miami Hamilton
now can enjoy even better service in the Office of
Academic Advising and Retention as high tech enters
advising.
Using the latest in software programming, Miami Hamilton
academic advisers can more efficiently monitor student
sessions and track student inquiries with a simple
swipe of the Miami ID.
According to Joe Murray, director, the software program
alerts staff when a student comes in for an appointment.
It then allows staff to log the amount of time allocated
for the appointment and provides electronic documentation
for discussion summaries. It also allows for any follow
up documentation including the ability to directly
send the student email.
“What’s nice about the new system is
that it can generate data regarding our office activities
which will then allow us to not only keep track of
students, but see trends to help us plan for the future,”
Murray added. “We are the first office to put
this in practice. Soon this system will be available
for faculty to use as well when they advise students.”
The office currently has the system up and running.
Students must bring their Miami ID along with a copy
of their DARS, which is a list of their courses. DARS
are available through Miami’s intranet system.
