New course complements Racial
Legacies and Learning town meetings
January 10, 2005
A new one-credit hour course to complement the Racial
Legacies & Learning town meeting series begins
this semester on January 12 from 4 pm to 5 pm each
Wednesday until March 2.
In American & World Cultures: Readings in Racial
Legacies, IDS 153, students will discuss the social
construction of race in America, its complexities
in our society and its lasting impact on our political,
judicial, educational and other social structures.
In addition, through self-introspection, students
also will examine how we, as products of our society,
contribute to the enduring legacies of race.
The Racial Legacies Town Meeting for this semester
will be held February 17 at 7pm featuring Dr. Maulana
Karenga. Attendance at the town meeting for students
enrolled in this new complementary course is mandatory.
Over the last five years, more than 10 town meetings
provided opportunities for dialogue, critical thinking,
and learning while emphasizing the importance of taking
action and making improvements in race relations in
both personal and professional settings.
