Women Aviator Heroism Demanded to be Told

March 11, 2004

A look at incredible women in history continues with The Michael J. Colligan History Project Lecture Series with speaker Sarah Byrn Rickman, Tuesday, March 23. Rickman will highlight the dramatic heroism of the WWII female aviators. The free lecture begins at 7:30 pm in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center.

Author of The Originals: The Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron of World War II, Rickman said the story of the first 28 women to fly for the U.S. Army in World War II “grabbed me and demanded to be written.” She also is the author of Flight From Fear, a fictional book based on the story of the WASPs (Women
Air Force Service Pilots), who learned to fly “the Army way” at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, during WWII.

Rickman is a former reporter/columnist for The Detroit News; served as managing editor of the Centerville-Bellbrook Times in suburban Dayton, Ohio, and is now a freelance writer/editor and author.

Her field of expertise is the women who flew for the Army in WWII and she has been researching various aspects of this subject since 1996 with more than two dozen personal one-on-one interviews.
