New Director of Admission not new to Miami Hamilton

August 2, 2004

For newly appointed Director of Admission and Financial Aid Archie Nelson, recruiting for Miami Hamilton is anything but new.

Archie Nelson, who served the university for five years as the assistant director of admission and financial aid, steps into the role of director on August 1 when Triana Adlon retires after 30 years with Miami.

"I always say that this is 'The Best Campus of Miami,'" he said when asked about his new appointment. "It's great to work here. This campus truly looks out for students. It's not just lip service."

Nelson's been integral in developing the admission program, which has seen steady increases in applications over the last several years. Currently the campus serves 3,500 students.

A familiar face in area schools, Nelson brings the campus to students not to just to encourage them to check out Miami Hamilton, but to really think about attending college. He has developed college preparation programs to help students and their parents ease into higher education.

One of his first duties as director will be to help two new admission staff members ease into their positions. Denise Withrow, joined the admission staff as the new administrative assistant this summer when Venis Torge retired after serving the university for 36 years, 34 of those at Miami Hamilton in the admission office. Katrina Bruce is a new admissions counselor.

Nelson plans to focus first on team building. "I want them to think outside of the box. I want us to maintain what we have, but also look for the new possibilities," he said.
