Heroes & Heroines Lecture Series Continues

The Michael J. Colligan History Project of Miami University Hamilton continues its series on Heroes & Heroines beginning with a lecture, Tuesday, January 27, featuring Miami University graduate Jim Roberts, 7:30 p.m. in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center.

Drawing from his critically acclaimed Hardball on the Hill, a history of Washington senators, Roberts will discuss the unlikely and often uncanny connection between the national pastime and the nation’s politics in his speech “Baseball Heroes and Political Heavyweights.”

Roberts is the founder and president of the American Studies Center, a non-profit foundation based in Washington, D.C. The center’s two major programs are Radio America, an award-winning news, talk, and documentary network with over 400 affiliates, and the World War II Veterans Committee, an organization that seeks to preserve the legacy of the World War II generation.

On February 12, Dr. Gary Moulton looks at Meriwether Lewis & William Clark. Moulton will assess the ultimate impact of the duo’s odyssey on the 200th anniversary of their heroic journey by looking at the journals written by Lewis & Clark. According to Moulton, who is the Thomas C. Sorensen Professor of History at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln and editor of the Journals of Lewis and Clark Expedition. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center.

On February 26, the History Project shines a light on America’s First Ladies with the leading historian on First Ladies, Carl S. Anthony. He will discuss how these remarkable women helped to shape both the American presidency and the American way of life.

On March 2, the community is invited to view the film Queen Victoria, from Edward the King). The life and times of Britain’s most revered monarch are stunningly depicted in this internationally acclaimed film. The film begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Harry T. Wilks Lecture Series.

A look at incredible women continues with speaker Sarah Byrn Richman who highlights the dramatic heroism of the World War II female aviators. The speech begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Harry T. Wilks Lecture Series.

Rounding out the spring lecture series are the granddaughters of the two most important and influential Allied leaders of World War II. Susan Eisenhower and Celia Sandys provide vivid recollections of their famous forbearers as part of our commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the epic D-Day invasion. The lecture begins April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Parrish Auditorium and it also will be held April 20 at Shriver Center from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

All lectures and film events are FREE and open to the public.
