Peter Haverkos,
recently appointed to Director of Learning Assistance
at Miami University Hamilton, works with what
he calls, “the main heart” of the
student—their academics.
Haverkos, who began his new duties in July
after serving three years at Miami Oxford in
learning assistance, feels right at home in
the role of academic support.
“I like focusing on their (students’)
academics—the main heart of the student,”
he said. “I enjoy being a part of a very
monumental time in their lives when they are
reaching for those degrees.”
This concern about students’ academics
falls right in step with his concern with the
“whole student,” which is what attracted
him to Miami Hamilton.
“The type of teaching and the quality
of faculty here is very exciting. They are concerned
about the students and that is going to make
my job easier,” he added
One area of focus this semester will be to
enhance the tutoring program of the department,
which provides one-on-one assistance to students.
In addition, the department will continue to
provide workshops and classes in English, reading
and mathematics, as well as classes that help
students feel more at ease in the college classroom
setting.
Haverkos joins Miami Hamilton with a master’s
degree in educational leadership from Miami
University and a bachelor’s of science
degree in math and secondary education from
Xavier University. He and his wife, Kim, have
two children, Gabriel, 3 and Abagail, 2.
