Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth
| One of the pioneers of the civil rights movement,
Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth spent his life preaching,
marching, organizing and struggling for the cause
of freedom dating back to the civil rights movement
of the 1950s in the segregated south. He formed
the Alabama Christian Movement for Civil Rights,
which later joined with Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr.’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Relocating to Cincinnati in 1961, he became and
remains the pastor of Greater New Light Baptist
Church in North Avondale. He is the founder of
the Shuttlesworth Housing Foundation which he
started in 1988 with $100,000 of his own money
and has granted more than 200 down payments of
$1,000-$1,500 to first-time Tristate home buyers.
In January of 2001, he received the Presidential
Medal of Honor from President Bill Clinton. |
