Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth

One of the pioneers of the civil rights movement, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth spent his life preaching, marching, organizing and struggling for the cause of freedom dating back to the civil rights movement of the 1950s in the segregated south. He formed the Alabama Christian Movement for Civil Rights, which later joined with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Relocating to Cincinnati in 1961, he became and remains the pastor of Greater New Light Baptist Church in North Avondale. He is the founder of the Shuttlesworth Housing Foundation which he started in 1988 with $100,000 of his own money and has granted more than 200 down payments of $1,000-$1,500 to first-time Tristate home buyers. In January of 2001, he received the Presidential Medal of Honor from President Bill Clinton.
