Faculty and staff members of Miami University
Hamilton fondly remember Mr. Richard J. Fitton
who died Sunday, March 14, in his home. Always
advocating for higher education, Mr. Fitton
and his family have been long-time supporters
and friends of Miami University Hamilton.
According to Miami Hamilton Executive Director
and Professor Daniel E. Hall, “Miami Hamilton
will greatly miss Mr. Fitton. His deep concern
for providing high quality education has been
a constant throughout his years of service to
us. Mr. Fitton was not afraid to dream big,
and more importantly, not one to wait around
for someone else to do the work.”
Since the 1990s, Mr. Fitton has been an active
member of Miami Hamilton’s Community Advisory
Committee. The Richard J. Fitton Scholar Leader
Award has benefited scores of area students
who attend Miami Hamilton. In addition, Mr.
Fitton has provided significant unrestricted
financial support to meet the needs of the campus.
Recently, the family honored the campus with
a gift of $3.3 million to build a 7,000 square
foot botanical conservatory. At the family’s
request, this new building will be called The
Conservatory. The gift also provides
for the improvement and integration of the adjacent
campus landscape as a resource for teaching
and research.
