Returning favorites and new faces
headline MUH Artist Series
May 24, 2004
Favorite returning musicians, along with some new
faces, headline Miami University Hamilton's Artist
Series during the 2004-2005 season.
Leading the upcoming series is Gillian Welch,
7:30 p.m. on September 12. With a recent Grammy award
for her efforts on the O Brother Where Art Thou
soundtrack and a 2003 Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary
Folk Album, Time (The Revelator), Welch is
now one of the top singer-songwriters in American
music.
October is a jam-packed month with Trio Globo
taking the stage at 8:00 p.m. on October 2. With rhythm
influences derived from travels in six continents,
Trio Globo has a combustible spontaneity rooted in
jazz, classical, and sacred music. Grammy-award winning
cellist Eugene Friesen, harmonica virtuoso and pianist
Howard Levy (formerly of the Flecktones), and world-renowned
percussionist Glen Velez are true originals reinventing
their instruments in new music.
On October 23 at 8:00 p.m., catch an evening of Celtic
music with Patrick Street. The group
features Andy Irvine, Kevin Burke, Jacki Daly, and
Ged Foley.
On October 24 at 7:30 p.m. Ladysmith Black
Mambazo performs a musical and spiritual
alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing
every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic
landscape.
November kicks off with two old friends, John
Cowan Band and Jesse Winchester
will work their magic beginning at 8:00 p.m. on November
13.
A few days later, on November 17, Mike Marshall
and Edgar Meyer will delight the
audience with compositions from a variety of musical
genres. The two are pioneers in the "Classical
Crossover" movement and are Grammy award winners
and two more favorites of the Artist Series.
Winter leads off with the 2003 IBMA Vocal Group of
the Year. Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver
return to Parrish Auditorium on January 29 at 8:00
p.m. for an evening of Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel
Music.
Then in the spring, Mark O'Conner's Hot Swing
Trio warms up Parrish Auditorium with two
shows, 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., on April 9. Grammy
Award-winning violinist and composer Mark O'Conner,
along with former Grappelli sideman John Burr on bass
and virtuoso Frank Vignola on guitar, pays tribute
to jazz greats Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt
with jazz standards and new compositions.
Rounding out the year is another Artist Series favorite,
IIIrd Tyme Out, with special guest
The Lost and Found on April 16 beginning
at 8:00 p.m. when two of the best bands in bluegrass
return to Parrish Auditorium.
