When Kemba Smith was 23 years old and a sophomore
at Hampton University in Virginia, her life
took a horrific twist-a prison sentence of 24
years and 6 months after pleading guilty to
conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine.
Today, Smith talks about the events leading
up to her imprisonment, her pardon by President
Bill Clinton, and her dream of "becoming an
everyday parent" to her son Armani, who was
born in prison.
Smith
brings her story to Miami University Hamilton
Tuesday, March 4, for a FREE lecture to begin
at 1:00 p.m. in the Harry T. Wilks Conference
Center, 1601 Peck Boulevard.
Smith
will discuss the critical process of making
choices. As a sophomore, Smith became involved
with a man whom she knew very little. According
to Smith, she had no knowledge of the fact that
he was a drug dealer. He began to use her in
his "business" by having her carry money, rent
storage space, etc. She began to fear him as
he became abusive toward her.
While
Smith said she never actually handled any drugs,
she was charged with trafficking 255 kilograms
of crack cocaine and sentenced. |
