Miami Hamilton's Dr. Mark Christian of Black
World Studies and a member of the committee,
said in relation to Dr. Asante: "His work in
the field of Black World Studies has gained
legendary status, particularly with his concept
of Afrocentricity and the epistemology of an
African centered paradigm in education. We are
very fortunate to have his presence on our campus.
I'm sure it will be a very rewarding intellectual
experience for all."
According
to Bob Rusbosin, assistant executive director
of Miami Hamilton and chair of the organizing
committee, "at the heart of the racial legacies
series is the attempt to create dialogue that
can enhance and improve race relations in American
society. The focus for February is related to
how we should interact with one another in racial
terms. For example, should we adopt a "colorblind"
approach and see each other merely as human
beings? Or, on the contrary, should we acknowledge
openly our differences and learn to engage with
each other on racially conscious terms?"
To
kick off the February Town Meeting, Dr. Asante
will share top billing Tuesday, February 4,
with the nationally acclaimed group, Persuasions,
who will perform in celebration of Black History
Month beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Parrish. Known
for their a cappella harmony, the Persuasions
will perform a medley of well-known songs, including
"Lean on me."
Dr.
Asante will lecture on the topic "Afro centricity"
beginning at about 7:30 p.m. Tickets for Tuesday
night's concert/lecture are available at the
Shriver Ticket Center, 529-3200. Cost is $6
for general admission and $3 for faculty, students
and staff of Miami University.
Described
by the media as "groundbreaking" in its approach
to communication and understanding, Racial
Legacies & Learning is sponsored by Miami
University Hamilton's Office of the Executive
Director, Multicultural Services, Student Services,
along with the City of Hamilton's Department
of Human Relations. Additional supporting sponsors
include more than 60 local and university organizations.
