Activities:  Community Peace Fest

April

The Office of Multicultural Services in partnership with the Human Relations Department for the City of Hamilton hosted a Community Peace Fest on Saturday, April 26, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the courtyard of Miami University Hamilton.  We would like to give a special thanks to our sponsors the City of Hamilton, Miami University Hamilton, Miller Brewing Company and the United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 1099.

The Community Peace Fest was a multicultural festival devoted to promoting peace, understanding and respect among people of different races, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds.  Vendors sold art, food, merchandise and clothing.  Social service agencies distributed information and provided services.  There were various forms of entertainment, games and a fashion show all for the public at no charge!  Entertainers performed through various dances and music.

We conducted a poster and essay contest for children within the Hamilton City School District that promoted the theme of Peace in Our Community as well as a spoken word contest all open to the public and held during the event.  We welcomed Miss Sophia Davis, Miss Hamilton as a guest speaker.  Miss Davis announced the winners.  The winners of our essay, poster and spoken word contests are as follows:  Linda Anres (Hamilton Freshman), Brittany Jones (Garfield Middle), Caroline Herzog (Monroe Elementary), Ty Garrison (Cleveland Elementary), Phalen Kuckuck (Garfield Middle), Ashley Roberts (Harrison Elementary) and Brent Billingsley (Miami University Hamilton).  Congratulations to our winners of the Community Peace Fest!!!  Each first place winner will receive $50.  We also recognize the following:  Alan Hernandez (Harrison Elementary) honorable mention for an essay, Colin Thrasher (Garfield Middle) best use of a quote for an essay, Matt Saylor (Garfield Middle) honorable mention for an essay and Clay Kenney (Garfield Middle) honorable mention for originality of thought for an essay.  Once again congratulations to all of our participants.

We would like to say thank you to Avon, Discovery Toys, Juice Plus+, Karen Woods and Pampered Chef as well as all the others on our list of entertainers, service agencies and vendors for being a part of our Community Peace Fest.  We valued your participation and enjoyed your presence.
