A Faculty Guide to Rentschler Library

Services

The library provides an assortment of services including personalized research assistance with the library's collection of print and electronic resources, course reserves, and interlibrary loan for borrowing materials from other libraries. Please feel free to ask a staff member for help in any area of the library.

University Libraries' Website

The web site for the University Libraries serves as the primary source for information about the libraries and as a gateway to hundreds of quality information resources such as the library catalog, article databases, electronic reserves, and much more.

It is also accessible from the MyMiami site by clicking the “Libraries” link. Visit us at: http://www.lib.muohio.edu

Borrowing Privileges

Faculty members at Miami University have access to a significant collection of resources through the University Libraries. Faculty can borrow materials from any of the University Libraries by presenting their Miami University ID card at time of checkout.

The faculty due date for most items in the circulating collection is June 30 th of the current academic year. Borrowing policies for audiovisual resources, periodicals, and popular reading items may vary. Please contact the library if you have any questions about the availability of materials.

Online Requesting
Materials available at other campus libraries can be requested and sent to Rentschler Library for you to checkout. Some items in the catalog with the "Library Use Only" status, such as reference items, are non-circulating and usually cannot be requested.

Requests can be submitted online through the library catalog or a library staff member can place the request on your behalf. Items are usually delivered in 2-3 days and can be checked out at the circulation desk in the library. After an item arrives, you will receive a notice to your Miami email account indicating the item is ready to be picked up. Items can be returned to any of the University Libraries circulation desks or book returns.

OhioLINK

In addition to the resources in the University Libraries, faculty have access to the library collections of over 85 academic institutions in Ohio as part of our membership in OhioLINK. The shared statewide catalog currently includes over 45 million records.

Online Requesting - OhioLINK
Materials available at OhioLINK member libraries can be requested and sent to Rentschler Library for checkout. Requests can be submitted online through the OhioLINK Library Catalog. Items are usually delivered and available within 7 days. You will be notified by email and campus mail when an item arrives. Checkout period for most items is 3 weeks with up to four renewals allowed. Items can be returned to any of the University Libraries circulation desks.

Audiovisual Resources

A considerable number of audiovisual titles are available in the library system for student and faculty use. Videos are available in VHS, DVD, and online formats.

Finding Videos
Researchers can use the library catalog to determine audiovisual holdings in the University Libraries. The catalog provides numerous search options and allows users to limit a search to only include audiovisual materials.

Title Lists
The web site for the University Libraries has a simple alphabetically organized video title list and title lists for non-English language videos sorted by language. These lists only include items owned by the Instructional Materials Center (IMC) in Oxford.

Digital Videos
Students and faculty have access to an online collection of over 1850 full-length educational videos that are licensed for use at Miami University. Videos can be viewed online or temporarily downloaded for playback from the OhioLINK Digital Media Center.

Audiovisual Booking
Most audiovisual resources in the Hamilton and Oxford libraries can be booked for use later in the semester. Booking an item prevents other patrons from checking it out during the time period for which the item is booked. For more information please contact the circulation supervisor at 785-3179 or stop by the circulation desk in the library.

Collection Management

View our collection management policy to learn more about the guidelines used by the Rentschler Library staff in making collection management decisions and to see how faculty can be involved. Faculty who would like to recommend an item for the library's collection can submit a request using the Suggest an Item for Purchase form.

Library Instruction

Library instruction is an effective way to help your students become familiar with the tools needed for successful academic research. The diverse range of print and electronic resources available to students can often be overwhelming. A library instruction session can help familiarize students with specific resources needed for their course projects. In most cases, the librarian will tailor an instruction session to meet the specific research needs of your students. This usually includes an explanation and demonstration of various tools such as the University Libraries' web site, the library catalog, relevant reference materials, and periodical databases.

Sessions are typically held in the Library Instruction Classroom which is equipped with demonstration facilities and computers for students to gain hands-on experience.

When scheduling, please be prepared to provide the librarian with information about the course project(s) that require research and any specific requests for topics you would like covered.

To schedule a class contact Mark Shores at 785-3203 or shoresml@muohio.edu, or submit an online class request form at: http://www.ham.muohio.edu/library/faculty/classrequest.htm

Interlibrary Loan

The goal of our interlibrary loan service is to assist patrons in obtaining books, periodical articles, and other materials that are not readily available through standard means. The library is part of a lending network and frequently locates and requests materials on behalf o our patrons from libraries throughout the United States and internationally.

Books
To obtain books that are not available in the University Libraries or through the OhioLINK system, patrons can submit interlibrary loan requests directly from the University Libraries' web site.

Periodical Articles
Patrons can also submit interlibrary loan requests for periodical articles that are not available through print or electronic holdings at Rentschler Library.

For assistance in selecting resources relevant to the needs of your students, contact Krista McDonald at 785-3100 mcdonak@muohio.edu, or Mark Shores at 785-3203, shoresml@muohio.edu.

A faculty copy card is available upon request at the circulation desk for use in the library's copiers. This card has been made available to accommodate faculty research needs. For other photocopying needs (syllabi, class handouts, etc.) please use the photocopier in the faculty secretary's office, 532 Mosler.

A bypass key for microfilm printing in the library is also available for faculty use.

Course Reserves

Materials expected to be highly used by students can be placed on reserve in the library. Items typically include required readings, videos, supplemental resources, etc. The loan period for each item is designated by the instructor and can include 2 hour (library use only), overnight, or 3 days.

Electronic Reserve
Instructors can also choose to have materials made available electronically so that students can have online access to readings 24 hours a day.
