Celebrate your fREADom!

From Monday, September 28th through Friday October 2nd, Rentschler Library created a “living display” as a tribute to our freedom to read. The goal was to have someone reading a “banned book” non-stop during the library’s business hours, beginning at 8:00 am that Monday and ending that Friday at 5:00 p.m.. While we didn't quite hit that goal, we did have fun increasing awareness about censorship. In just one short half-hour shift, students and faculty showed their support of intellectual freedom and shook their fists at censorship—simply by sitting down and reading their favorite challenged or banned book.

Would you believe 42 of Radcliffe’s “Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century” have been the target of ban attempts? Without advocates for free speech and freedom of choice, classics like “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “The Grapes of Wrath”, and “The Lord of the Flies” would be taken away from public access.
