Grant Development Assistance

External Funding at Miami Hamilton

Every aspect of higher education, from primary and applied research to curriculum development, from student and community services to facility development and maintenance, is feeling the pinch of tightening state and federal budgets. But all of these types of projects can be funded through external grants.

External funding is truly a win-win-win situation. Your knowledge and career are enhanced by completing your project; Miami students and the University benefit when you apply these knowledge and career benefits in the University; and the project funder benefits by having their mission, vision and goals achieved through your expertise and project contributions.

To foster these win-win-win situations, Miami provides assistance to all faculty and staff who compete for external funding. At Miami, the primary office for assistance is called OARS (Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship), and it’s located on the Oxford campus in Roudebush Hall. On the Hamilton campus, additional assistance is provided by the Grant Development Coordinator, Amy Lamborg.

This Hamilton campus assistance can include (but is not limited to):

• Introducing you to “grantseeking”
• Finding appropriate funding sources for your project
• Refining your project to closely match the funder’s goals
• Communicating and relationship building with funders
• Writing and/or editing your proposal
• Obtaining letters of support for your project
• Submitting your proposal

Resources to Help You

The best resource is the OARS Web site. This Web site provides you with:

• Grants databases, lists, and links so you can search for funding sources
• Internal (Miami University) funding opportunities
• Funding alerts and newsletters
• Forms and procedures required by Miami to submit grants
• Data commonly requested on grant applications
• Information on research using human subjects, institutional animal care, and inventions and patents.

Other resources are available—please contact Amy Lamborg with any questions. Her number on the Hamilton campus is 785-3254, and her email is lambora@muohio.edu.
