"I first met Dick in the summer of 1945 on board the U.S.S. Hornet-CU12. Dick had been assigned as a replacement while the ship was in dry dock in San Francisco being repaired from typhoon damage.

I transferred off with the airgroup and Dick stayed aboard as ship's company when the ship was converted to a troop carrier to bring military personnel home. This was known as "magic carpet."

Several years later after discharge we met again at the Main St. branch of First National Bank. Dick was Branch Manager. We saw each other often after that and Hornet was alwways mentioned.

Hornet Club was formed in 1948 and a reunion is held every year since.

In 1995 our reunion was held at Drawbridge Estates in Northern KY. Dick, myself, Bud Newkirk, Don Brandt, and Ken Glass formed the committee and mad e all the arrangements. That reunion has been remembered as the most successful in the history of the club. Dick was treasurer. The committee met twice a month at his farm for two years prior to reunion. This committee remains active and has been a vital part of all reunions since as members of Board of Directors.

Dick has always been a tireless and dedicated person and will be greatly missed by all who associated with him. We will miss him at the Red Squirrel breakfast meetings held monthly with other WWII carrier vets."
