Information for Faculty
Who is responsible for placing textbook orders
with the bookstore?
In most cases, individual instructors are responsible
for choosing their textbooks and giving that information
to the bookstore. In some cases, however, textbook
decisions are made at the department level. In still
others, individual instructors choose their texts
but communicate that information to their department
chair or other designated textbook liaison, who then
collates it and sends it on to the bookstore. If you’re
unsure of the procedure you should follow, check with
your department chair or coordinator.
How do I submit my order?
In order to minimize potential misunderstanding,
the bookstore asks that all textbook orders be submitted
in writing. Preprinted Textbook Request Forms are
available at the bookstore or from the Faculty Secretary’s
Office in 532 Mosler.
You may also download a copy of the Textbook
Request Form from this website. You will need Adobe
Acrobat Reader to open and print this form. Acrobat
Reader is available free of charge from Adobe.
When are orders due?
Orders should be submitted by the following deadlines.
If you are hired after these dates, please submit
your order as soon as possible.
Spring Semester: October 15
Fall Semester: April 1
Summer Terms: March 15
Classes don’t start for several months.
Why does the bookstore want my order so early?
Textbooks are very expensive. Industry figures show
that the average full time student can expect to spend
upwards of $900 per year on required textbooks. One
of the few avenues the bookstore has to help control
these costs is to make available as many used books
as possible. Used books can save students 25 percent
or more over the cost of new books. But the supply
of used books is limited and in high demand, and we’re
competing with schools all over the country for the
same small supply.
Turning your order in early gives us more time to
search our network of used book suppliers and also
allows us to pay higher prices to our current students
during buyback for books that are being reused.
I want to create my own course packet. How to I arrange for the bookstore to carry it?
The Miami University Print Center, a division of Miami's IT Services, is in charge of producing course packets for courses at all Miami campuses. Located in Gaskill Hall on the Oxford campus, you can phone them at 513.529.6065 or email them at printcenter@muohio.edu. They can arrange copyright clearance when needed, and they offer a wide variety of printing, paper, and binding options. They can also produce non-print media such as CDs of DVDs should you need them. Their knowledgeable staff will be happy to discuss your needs with you to produce just the materials you require. Be sure to let them know that your class is on the Hamilton Campus and they will ship the finished packets directly to the Miami Hamilton Bookstore.
