Academic Advising
Academic advising
is an ongoing process of assisting students
in academic planning, helping directly or through
referrals to solve problems which influence
academic success, helping students develop the
skills/tools necessary to make mature and informed
decisions regarding their academic careers.
If you are an entering student, an academic
advisor will help you understand the requirements
for graduation—the Miami Plan. The
courses you will take in the beginning of your
academic career are called Foundation Courses.
Your advisor will explain the requirements of
your major, which are different for each degree.
Blending these requirements can be complex but
with the advisor's help, you can select courses
that will ensure a smooth efficient progression
toward graduation. Your advisor will discuss
placement scores, transcript and degree information,
and answer any other academic questions you
might have. He or she can help you balance
your course load to accommodate a job, family
obligations and other commitments.
