Advising Services
If you are an entering student, an academic adviser will help clarify the requirements—known as “The Miami Plan”—for graduation. The courses you take in the beginning of your academic career are called Foundation Courses. Your adviser will also explain the requirements of your major, which vary for each degree.
Blending these requirements can be complex, but with the adviser’s help, you can select courses that will ensure a smooth and efficient progression toward graduation.
In addition, your adviser will discuss placement scores, transcript and degree information, and answer any other academic questions you might have. He or she can help you balance your course load to accommodate a job, family obligations and other commitments.
In addition to selecting courses, your academic adviser has a wealth of information to share with you including:
- Adding and dropping courses
- GPA information
- Information about academic honors:
- President’s List (4.0 GPA)
- Dean ’s List (3.5-3.99 GPA)
- Campus Dean’s List (3.5-4.0 GPA for part-time students)
- Long-term course planning
- Declaring or changing majors
- Relocating to the Oxford campus
- Information on academic probation, suspension and dismissal
- General questions and referrals.
