Admission Requirements for First-Time, First Year Students
Miami University Hamilton has an open admission
policy for first-time entering first-year students. You will
be admitted if you have earned a diploma from
a secondary program chartered by the state board
of education, a General Educational Development
(GED) diploma, or if you are alternatively educated.
Test scores are required ONLY from current high
school seniors and recent high school graduates.
New students must participate in the COMPASS English,
reading and mathematics assessment program, the
results of which are used for placement and advising.
You will receive more information about COMPASS
after you have been accepted.
If you are planning to pursue a bachelor's degree
and graduated from high school after 1985, Miami
University recommends that you have completed
the following in high school or through alternative
education:
- four units of college preparatory English;
- three units of college preparatory mathematics
(including Algebra II);
- three units of college preparatory natural science
(including both a physical and biological science);
- three units of college preparatory social studies
(including one unit of history);
- two units of foreign language, both in the same
language; and
- one unit of fine arts, including
art, drama, or music, either appreciation or performance.
If you take any high school units
during junior high school, Algebra I in the eighth
grade, for example, these units will count toward
this requirement. You will not be denied admission
if you do not meet these standards. Instead, you
will be required to complete additional courses,
which will count toward graduation. They are regular,
not remedial, courses.
